Bulletin for January 25, 2018

Summary of January 18 Meeting

Happy Bucks: $ 20

Rotary of JoCo welcomes Nikki Anthony as our first new member of 2018. Nikki is the Development and Community Relations Director for Growing Futures of Overland Park. She brings a lot of compassionate energy to our club and as an Oklahoma Sooner fan,  adds to the collegiate rivalry among our members.

A lifelong eavesdropper, The Story Scribe founder Amy Woods Butler found her true calling when she discovered she could make a living asking people about their lives as a personal historian. She has written about Latin Americans, Midwest grandmothers, and Southern gentlemen. She has listened to tales of a Cherokee state trooper, a refugee from Hurricane Katrina, and a woman who, at age 90, continues to fight social injustice in Kansas City.  Amy shared her story as our guest speaker at last week's meeting.  You can find out more at www.thestoryscribe.com

ROTARY MINUTE

January 15, 2018

Has the cold knocked the Holiday spirit out of you, or have you tried to be as warm and optimistic as you felt during the holidays?   Keeping that spirit going when there is no holiday or time with family to look forward to means we have to find other ways to be positive. Setting goals and accomplishing good things are ways we become Christmas angels year around.

We Rotarians, of all people, must continue to be rays of sunshine to those around us or many folks might lose hope altogether.  Sometimes our voices may be the only positives people hear in a day at work, or shopping, or serving, or sharing.  Our smiles may be the only happy thing someone might see that day.  Our human warmth of spirit will help keep that holiday spirit going during times of cold weather, bad news, and problem-solving for those who are experiencing tough times.

Helping raise someone else’s spirits is rather like the song: “Make someone happy, Make just one someone happy . . .. And it will make you happy, too!”
