Bulletin for March 16, 2022

Mark Sharp, the Supervisor of Volunteer Programs at Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, was our guest presenter at the March 3rd meeting. The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is a destination in Overland Park where children can learn, grow and have fun.

President's Message

One of the greatest aspects of being a Rotarian is engaging with individuals and organizations that are making a positive difference in our communities and in the world. E-Ship Rising is an entrepreneurial program that works with youth in Wyandotte County who have the drive to launch their own business and gain agency over their future, but lack the connection to resources and mentors. Our club had the opportunity last week to meet two of the young entrepreneurs that received education and professional development through the E-Ship Rising program. I was extremely impressed by these young entrepreneurs and the revenue-generating businesses that they have launched.

There is a fifth Thursday in March so we decided to meet via Zoom on Thursday, March 31st to discuss and plan for the next phase of service projects. Please watch for an email with the proposed agenda and Zoom link.

Have a great week.

Becky

ROTARY MINUTE

Rotary Minute March 14, 2022

An important aspect of Rotary projects is matching grants.  Where projects are done by Rotarians, local or  district or international,  matching monies are often donated by club members.  Our KCK Learning Club Project with inner-city youth is a good example.

As this year’s project was planned,   $1500 in seed money was approved by the Rotary Club of Johnson County Charitable Foundation.   This money, along with member donations, helps three phases of the project.

Phase I of the project pays for citizen service prizes and family Christmas gifts the youngsters would plan on giving their family members.   The amount funded was $700, but the total given to the Learning Club by our club was $1025.

In Phase II of the project, we have funded $400 for snacks at their after-school meetings.  So far,  46 boxes of snacks with an estimated value of $690 have been delivered by Rotarians  as volunteer gifts.  That still leaves the $400 to be delivered to them for snacks.

We need at this point to provide $400 and to begin planning for Phase III of the project. Here we provide another $400 + member donations to buy school supplies for the youngsters in the Learning Club.  This event allows Rotarians to go with some of the LC teen tutors to select and purchase needed books and supplies.

For volunteering additional matching gifts or assistance with shopping,  check with  Bill Robinett,  Gabriel Rop or Larry Williams.

Matching Grants are alive and well at the Rotary Club of Johnson County.
