Bulletin for October 4, 2018
Summary of September 27th Meeting
Thanks to your generosity we collected $37 in 'Happy Bucks' and 'Dollars for the Foundation' last week. All these contributions benefit the Rotary International Foundation.
Jim Grant, the Executive Director of Maison de Naissance, was our speaker last Thursday. Maison de Naissance is a birth center that also provides transportation, culturally appropriate care and education for patients and caregivers in rural Haitian communities. The organization, which was founded by two Kansas City Obstetricians, has recently been awarded a 3-year Global Grant from Rotary International.

After being dragged around town with out of town guests on two days of shopping, dining, and feeling like I’ve been dragged through a hole too small for me to fit through, I stumbled onto a relatively new thrift store in Independence.  They were having a super sale on children’s books and I bought six or so. I know this won’t be a part of our recent grant submitted by John Ruo, but it’s worthy of thinking that as we go through the entire year that we should keep an eye out for children’s books. AND GET PUMPED FOR OCTOBERFEST!

OKTOBERFEST on Thursday,  October 11th

Oktoberfest is fast approaching!  Oct 4th is the deadline for silent auction items, to turn-in ticket money and return unsold event tickets.  Please email Pam Stockman if you are available to help with the set-up on October 11th.  Thank you!

The Rotary FOUNDATION BANQUET and AWARDS DINNER will be held this year on November 3rd at the Sheraton Overland Park.

Rotary Global Grants fund health, education, job growth and peace-making projects all over the world.  Millions of dollars a year are donated by Rotarians and then put into play for projects of local Rotarians, with on-the-scene Rotary Clubs bringing these projects to fruition.
Last Thursday Jim Grant, a local businessman turned International healthcare worker, spoke to the JoCo Rotary Club about a Global Grant that his non-profit organization received to advance child-birth safety in Haiti. It is a project that delivers well-babies and nurtures them into a healthy life. This is done by recruiting and training mid-wives to work with mothers-to-be in outlying areas of Haiti. Funding the growth of this successful enterprise requires matching funds from Rotary Clubs to fully fund the Global Grant project.  After hearing of the Haiti project’s success, our Charitable Foundation board members pledged $1500 to help this Global Grant project go forward.
Having money available for matching grants is the reason Rotary Club of Johnson County developed and incorporated the club Charitable Foundation to hold and invest funds during the-mid 1990’s.  This means that even during the working final stages of our big fund raiser for local charitable projects, Oktoberfest, our club is also helping with international needs and concerns.  This time it is Haitian mothers and babies.
