President's Message

Thank you to Larry for sharing the history of our club's foundation and suggesting a way to move forward with foundation business given the size of our club.  We will discuss this and make decisions at an upcoming assembly meeting.    Now that CDC guidelines regarding masks and social distancing have changed, please strongly consider attending  our meetings in person.   Our district governor, Faron Barr will be attending this week and it would be nice to have a good in person showing.  A separate email went out regarding the Monarch banners which benefit Rotary Youth camps.

Our spring service project will be cleaning up at the Ernie Miller Nature Park.  Two dates have been set aside to accommodate everyone's schedule - 10:00 am  Friday June 4th and Saturday June 5th. Children and spouses are welcome to join in.  Please RSVP to Becky Johsnton on which date you plan on attending.    Finally, please look for an email regarding Darren Tehven's memorial service.  See you Thursday!

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Johnson County Meals on Wheels has switched to STAFF ONLY Monday Delivery for the unforeseeable future.  They will not schedule volunteers to deliver meals.  Meals on Wheels clients will receive a weekly Frozen Box of meals as well as a large box of Shelf-Stable meals.  They are also contacting clients weekly to check-in. I will notify everyone when the regular schedule will resume.

ROTARY MINUTE

April 26, 2021

The Rotary Club of Johnson County Charitable Foundation was established in the mid-1990s when the club had nearly 80 members.  That was before we helped establish several new  Rotary clubs and sent many members to those clubs to help them get off the ground.

The purpose of our Charitable Foundation was to have a ready supply of money so we move quickly into Matching Grant projects that we wanted to support in the District and with RI.  We have helped many humanitarian international projects in Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Honduras,  Guatemala and Nigeria.  This doesn’t count the dozens of local area projects we have aided in this past 15 years.

The foundation has taken a new direction, with many smaller projects, which fits better the size of the club.  The club as a whole needs to look at this Charitable Foundation and set some ground rules for its use. We might even decide to dissolve the funds with charitable giving to the many hunger, homeless, health, educational and equality needs.  Some might think we should set a limit of spending $2000-5000 per year until we get under $10,000.  Its a conversation we need to have since the goals for Foundation funds seem to have changed by club members in recent years.
